=Adding an existing user to an existing group=

 sudo usermod -a -G <group> <user>

=Add user to a group without logoff=

Usually you need to logout and login again for the new group permissions to take effect. 

But you can skip the logout and login if you do this after adding the user to the group:

 newgroup my-new group
